Dear reader,

A core activity of GlobalRize is mentoring students so they get to know Jesus (better). One of our mentors was concerned about a student of hers and kept sending her messages. Her tenacity resulted in her student staying out of the hands of a traditional doctor.

In the story titled ‘Pearls from our Students’ you can read that mentors often also learn a lot from their students. Both sides benefit!

Enjoy reading!

Loise from Kenya: ‘My mentor answered my questions, as if she was here with me’

Loise from KenyaLoise from Kenya took ten months to do our Life of Jesus Course. When she started the course, she was in a period of feeling desperate due to the problems she had in her finances and relationships. But because of the tenacious contact of her mentor, Betty, she got to know Jesus in a new way.

Loise: ‘I found joy the more that I interacted with my mentor, who answered my questions as if she was here with me. She also asked me questions that motivated me to get more into the Word. I found a friend in her. In the beginning, the most difficult thing for me was to open up to a total stranger. But after a while, the most beautiful thing to me was that after each lesson I felt motivated and renewed.’

Traditional doctor

‘There was a time that I almost consulted a traditional doctor. I felt it was wrong to seek help from those traditional doctors, but it felt like an easy way to get rid of my problems. I talked to my mentor and she prayed with me. Still, I was tempted to go, and that did happen once, but I felt guilty and prayed to be forgiven. I promised God not to leave, even if He didn’t help me, but He did help me! I am now free from the near-depression state that I was in, and fully convinced that I should never try for help anywhere else, except from Jesus.’

Calmly carrying on

Her mentor, Betty: ‘The contact with Loise really confirmed for me that it is good to calmly carry on with a student. Ten months is actually quite a long period to do this course, but I am glad that I kept in contact with her. That was because she had gone to see a traditional doctor, since a relative had advised it. I was concerned about that and prayed that she would not fall under the control of the traditional doctor. I shared with her that forgiveness is always available when we confess our sins.’

Changed

Loise: ‘I want to do more in the Kingdom of God: teach others His Word, especially children. My deepest wish is that those seeking the meaning of life will discover which God we serve. He is never limited in what He can do for us – nothing is impossible with Him (Luke 1:37) This course is a great ministry in God’s Kingdom. May our good God keep all of you shining for His glory. I have also recommended the course to a friend, hopefully she will start soon.’

‘Have I experienced change? Yes, although I don’t think people noticed the change because I’ve always been in church and the difficulties happened to me silently. I found the Bible more interesting and have been reading it regularly. My faith was shaken, but my mentor brought me back in a loving way. Forever grateful!’

Pearls from our Students

Pareltjes cursistenAt the end of our online Bible courses, we always ask our students what they have learned, how the contact with their mentor was, and if they have gained a new perspective on something. We regularly see some pearls among the answers – precious words that teach or encourage you as a mentor.

Many of the students who we guide, live in Africa. Their living situations are often much harder than our own. That makes it extra special to read these testimonies.

Trusting in God

June from South Africa is happy with her mentor:
‘Thanks a lot, that you have given me so much of your time and encouraged me. All the questions I asked you came from a desire to know more. You answered me, not just to please me, but with truth from the Bible. Most people are misled because they don’t trust in God’s Word. The course helped me to understand the Bible better from the beginning to the end.’

Jesus is powerful

Rose from Kenya had ovarian cancer and had to undergo chemotherapy. ‘Anxiety and worrying are no longer a part of me. I’ve learned to totally trust in God, no matter what the circumstances are. It helps me to know that Jesus paid for our sins in full on the cross and took up our afflictions. I may call upon His mighty name and trust that he can do miracles.’

Enriching

Mentor Esther shares: ‘It is enriching to be a mentor, first of all, because of what you are able to share with your students. I notice that the verses that I share with my students start to resonate in my own heart. And when I see the effect of the Bible verses on my life and the lives of my students, I often feel small. Usually, their situation is much more difficult than mine. It is amazing to see how big and great God is! How powerful His Word is!’
